Dyscophus is een geslacht van kikkers uit de familie Microhylidae en de onderfamilie dove kikkers (Dyscophinae) De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door Alfred Grandidier in 1872.
Een tomaat kikker kan zijn lichaam groot opgeblazen. Als een roofdier hem/haar toch pakt, dan scheidt de huid van de kikker een dikke irritante stof af, waardoor het roofdier hopelijk loslaat. De gomachtige stof is een gif-toxine die soms ook allergische reacties veroorzaakt bij mensen. De allergische reactie zal een mens niet doden en de kikker scheidt het gif alleen af als hij/zij bang is, kijken doe je met je ogen niet met je handen!- De Tomatenkikker staat op de lijst van bedreigde diersoorten.

When a predator grabs a tomato frog in its mouth, the frog's skin secretes a thick substance that gums up the predator's eyes and mouth, causing the predator to release the frog to free up its eyes. The gummy substance contains a toxin that occasionally causes allergic reactions in humans. The allergic reaction will not kill a human and the frog secretes it only when frightened. - They are also on the endangered species list. |
