The 13th edition of the international photography festival Cortona On The Move ended on 1 October.

A 3-month event, featuring a total of 26 exhibitions and 30 artists involved, 2 prizes, 26,000 visitors, predominantly Italians - about 70% of the total, coming mainly from northern and central Italy, but also many international visitors from the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, the United States and Canada, and about 2,200 locals from Cortona. The festival was also visited by more than 155 accredited journalists from all over the world, including France, Spain, Germany, etc. The opening days, when the greatest experts in the world of photography gathered in Cortona, and the month of September, with a peak in attendance during the last weekend, were particularly intense.

These are the facts and figures of the 2023 edition of the festival, which every year brings the best of international photography to the heart of Tuscany. The appointment next year will be Thursday 11 July 2024 with the inauguration of Cortona On The Move edition 14.

Among the protagonists of the past edition were Larry Fink, Massimo Vitali, Chauncey Hare, Dana Lixenberg, Janette Beckman, Barbara Iweins, Marco Garofalo, Nikita Teryoshin and many others.

"The results we achieved are a reward for our commitment in bringing photography to the centre of the national cultural offer," says Veronica Nicolardi, Director of Cortona On The Move. ‘’We strongly feel the responsibility of being among the main festivals in Europe dedicated to this art and the choices we make every year on the theme, the artists, and the partnerships are aimed at keeping a high level and improving year after year".

Cortona On The Move's commitment does not end with the festival, but continues throughout the year with many collaborations, events and meetings dedicated to photography and the appreciation of its protagonists and its many languages. These include the 12X12 project with Autolinee Toscane, dedicated to a new aesthetics of public transport, the talks recently organised together with Sony Italia, the collaboration with the MAEC - the Museum of the Etruscan Academy and the town of Cortona to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of maestro Luca Signorelli, and many other initiatives.

Special attention is also placed on young talents, so that the festival and the territory become hubs for young people who want to embark on a professional career in the world of photography and culture. This is the context for the two prizes awarded during the 13th edition of the festival. The Cortona On The Move Award is an open call with an open theme that was launched to support photographers in the development and production of their works. This year, it went to Valery Poshtarov for the "Father and Son" project. The 1st edition of the Vittoria Castagna Prize was aimed at young people working in the field of marketing and communication for cultural production. The winner of this 5,000 Euro prize is Silvia Bonaventura, who will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the Cortona On The Move team.
